About

Elaine Kirwan first became obsessed with music at the tender age of three, when Santa brought her a copy of The Bangles' Different Light and a Fisher-Price tape recorder. By the time she was five, she knew most of the lyrics from albums by The Beatles, Neil Diamond, The Eagles and whoever else was playing in her parents' car.

Throughout the years, as her obsession grew and her tastes developed, she found solace in singer-songwriters like Jeff Buckley, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan and Jewel, and bands such as Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Who and Led Zeppelin, among many others.

Aware that Elaine was sick of having nowhere to share her musings on music, a friend suggested she begin her very own blog. Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff is where Elaine regularly posts on what she loves about music, and includes everything from news items, interviews and gig reviews to feature pieces on her favourite musical acts and albums. Elaine also contributes to collaborative music blog fourforty4 where she writes a feature called "Nothing But The Girl(s)", which is primarily focused on celebrating the female voice in music. She was also involved in the planning of, and was a judge at, the inaugural Digital Socket Awards, a celebration of the best music of the year, nominated by the public, voted for and judged by Irish music bloggers. This summer, she is working as one of the official music bloggers of the 2011 Kilkenny Arts Festival.

When she's not ranting about music on her blog, Elaine likes to spend her time going to gigs, running down the stock level in pubs all around Ireland, being outdoors and travelling, preferably all in the company of good friends. She also enjoys boxset marathons of Freaks and Geeks and My So-Called Life, reading biographies of her musical heroes and lying in the dark with her iPod on shuffle.

Elaine currently lives in Limerick but dreams of someday relocating to a California-based Volkswagen camper van.
