ON MyPOD: The Pierces' You & I

Here's a couple of faces I haven't featured on the blog before. The Pierces are a New York band made up of 30-something sisters Catherine and Allison Pierce.

Raised by creative, self-confessed hippie parents in Alabama, the Pierce girls spent their younger years listening to Simon & Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell, as well as performing at weddings, parties and church events in their hometown. While in college, they sent a demo tape to a record company in Nashville, which resulted in the release of their debut self-titled album. Since then they have gone on to release a further three studio albums, the latest of which, You & I, was released in May. The girls recently played the 2FM Hot Press Academy stage at Oxegen, and recorded a stunning version of their track 'It Will Not Be Forgotten' in the Heineken Green Room for 2FM.

You & I, which boasts a gorgeous folk-rock sound filled with lush, layered arrangements and captivating melodies, was produced by Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman and Rik Simpson. Standout tracks on the album include 'You'll Be Mine', 'Glorious', Drag You Down', 'Space & Time' and the aforementioned 'It Will Not Be Broken'. With beautiful harmonies, stunning hooks and a comforting feeling of intimacy and sadness to it, You & I is a fine explanation as to why Berryman stopped The Pierces from packing it all in after their third album. Lovely.

Here's a video of The Pierces' performance of 'Love You More' on Later...with Jools Holland in 2010. For more on The Pierces see www.thepiercesmusic.com.
