How About the Girls?: A Musical Tribute to International Women's Day

Today, in honour of International Women's Day, Rarities pays tribute to a handful of its favourite female singer-songwriters.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It honours the work of the Suffragettes (those who campaigned for women's right to vote), celebrates women's success, and reminds the world of inequities that still need to be redressed. You can read more about International Women's Day here.

In typical Rarities fashion, women are celebrated for their music; here's a selection of some fantastic songs and performances by some very talented ladies:

Lisa Hannigan

Gemma Hayes

Cathy Davey

Laura Marling

Florence + the Machine

Smoke Fairies

Lykke Li

Imogen Heap

Ingrid Michaelson

Jesca Hoop (with Elbow's Guy Garvey)

Jewel

Sarah McLachlan

Fiona Apple

Ida Maria

Adele

Alanis Morissette

Regina Spektor

Chantal Kreviazuk

Natalie Merchant

That's just a select handful folks! For more of my rantings on women in music, take a visit to 4fortyfour music blog where I write a regular feature called "Nothing But The Girl(s)!".
