Since I started this blog, I often gave a shout-out to my favourite musical folk on their birthdays. Just a little note and my song of choice to show all my readers (all three of you...) who I love. Because I've been so busy of late, I've forgotten some. I am sure all these rich, famous musicians feel very sad and unappreciated as a result of this, my blog being oh so important to them (!), so here are those recently forgotten:
Rob Thomas
The lovely Rob Thomas turned 38 on 14th February of this year. Given that I used to be a massive fan of Matchbox Twenty in my late teens/early 20s, and that the band's music holds some great memories for me, he deserves mention here.
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)
I did a review of Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York to acknowledge Kurt's birthday/anniversary earlier this year (read it here), but I never need an excuse to mention him on this blog. Kurt would have turned 43 on 20th February of this year. He is, and always will be, my most favourite music person ever.
Sir Elton John
I'm including Elton John here beause I'm always looking for an excuse to play "Tiny Dancer". Or one of my favourite scenes from a movie ever, the below one from the movie Almost Famous. Plus I saw Elton live last year with my Dad and Auntie and I was quite impressed with his piano playing. So there. Anywho, the man turned 63 on 25th March.
Jewel
I have loved Jewel since 3rd Year of secondary school. Back then I was obsessed with her, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Radiohead, Blink 182 and the Goo Goo Dolls, among many others. I did a review of her latest album, a collection of lullabies, earlier this year (read it here) but am definately more a fan of her earlier work. I love her so much I can even forgive here for her terrible rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama"! The beautiful singer-songwriter turned 36 on 23rd May this year and also released her ninth studio album, Sweet and Wild. Review to follow here soon.
Bob Dylan
The legendary Bob Dylan turned 69 on 24th May of this year. It was an obvious choice to mention him here, but not so obvious what song to include; there are so many great ones to choose from. I've decided to go with "The Times They Are A-Changin'", because I listened to the Watchmen soundtrack over the weekend.
Lenny Kravitz
The fantastic singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist turned 46 on 26th May this year. And he's currently my ringtone!
Here's an interesting blues version of "Are You Gonna Go My Way":
Tom Morello
For his part in two fantastic rock bands, Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, Tom Morello definately deserves a shout-out for his birthday. The Grammy Award-winning guitarist turned 46 on 30th May, days before his live performance with RATM at the O2 Arena, Dublin. Read my post on the gig here.
Check out this video of some of Morello's fine guitar solos:
John Bonham (1948-1980)
31st of May would have seen John Bonham, drummer of one of my favourite bands, Led Zeppelin, turn 62. Known for his speed, power and distinctive sound, Bonham is still considered to be one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music.
Here he is with Zeppelin:
Alanis Morissette
Still one of my favourite singer-songwriters, Alanis Morissette has been been a constant feature on my walkman/discman/iPod for over 15 years. The very talented Canadian turned 36 on 1st June and also recently got married! Shame she never managed to hang on to that Ryan Reynolds...yummy... Here's Alanis kicking it old-style:
Brian Wilson
At the moment we're having fantastic weather in Ireland, and I will soon be heading off California-way on my travels, so what better time to pay tribute to a Beach Boy! Plus I am a big fan and their music always makes me feel happy (and who doesn't want to be happy, right?). Mr Wilson turned 68 on 20th June.
Bonzo. Wooo! What a man. The first bars of 'When the Levee Breaks' is the most carpet-shaking drumming ever
