NEW MUSIC: Jack Savoretti
Here's a newcomer to Rarities. Jack Savoretti is a half-English, half-Italian singer-songwriter who spent his youth travelling around Europe, where he picked up an accent that he describes as “transatlantic mutt”. His lucky break came after his hairdresser said she cut the hair of Natalie Imbruglia's manager and offered to pass on some of his music. You might recognise his voice from American TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill, the latter of which he has featured on many times. He has been hailed by music industry insiders as the next Bob Dylan and has had his songwriting compared to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Jeff Buckey, Damien Rice and Ray LaMontagne; pretty big shoes to fill no? But he certainly does deliver. Savoretti has a stunning voice; it is beautifully haunting, husky and emotive. His songs about the human condition are truly touching and will stay with you long after they have played out. According to his website, Savoretti didn't pick up a guitar until he was 16-years-old, but listening to his flawless and fluid playing will make you think the man was born with a guitar in his hand. He is without a doubt one of the most distinctive raw talents I have come across in a long time.
Savoretti released his debut album Between the Minds in 2007 and it is definately one for your music collections. It oozes quality. Particularly noteworthy tracks are "Chemical Courage", "Dr Frankenstein", "Soldier's Eyes", "Between the Minds", "Killng Man" and "No One's Aware". Savoretti's first real passion in life was poetry and he makes it fairly obvious with this debut, which boasts some pretty excellent imagery, and showcases a dark side that makes him even more appealing. All of Savoretti's songs are heartfelt, meaningful and beautifully melodic. In its entirety, Between the Minds effectively showcases the soulful voice of a musical gem; definately one to watch for the future.
Savoretti's second studio album Harder Than Easy was released in September 2009 in the USA as a download only album by De Angelis Records and is also worth checking out. For more of his music, check out Savoretti's MySpace page. Here's the title track from Savoretti's debut album; it's simply beautiful.
And as I said yesterday, I'm currently working on a piece on Bantry musician Noel Maguire, who just so happens to do a great cover of Savoretti's "Chemical Courage". Give this a listen:
